There’s this wonderful song by Christy Nockels that starts with the lyrics, If faith can move the mountains, then let the mountains move. We come with expectation, waiting here for you.
I’ve heard a lot about mountains moving lately. It reminds me of this necklace I had as a girl. There is a verse in Matthew 17 where Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” My mother bought me a necklace that had a glass bead strung on a fine gold chain and in it contained a mustard seed. I was to wear the necklace to remember that I only needed to have small faith to come to God in prayer.
Boy has my faith been challenged over the years. There were times I didn’t know that I could even drum up enough faith to fit in that glass bead. But there is always a kernel, I find. I believe in a big God. A God that works in ways I don’t understand. Yet a God that moves mountains, when it seemed as though it would be impossible for them to move.
Over and over in the Bible I find encouragement for me to just screw up that little bit of courage I have left to believe, to have faith, to trust that God has GOT THIS:
Matthew 9:22 – Your faith has healed you.
I Corinthians 16:13 – Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.
Matthew 9:29 – According to your faith, let it be done to you.
Mark 5:34 – Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering!
II Corinthians 5:7 – For we live by faith, not by sight.
Mark 11:22 – Have faith in God.
Ephesians 3:12 – In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
Matthew 15:28 – Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.
Matthew 21:21 – Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.
I know it doesn’t feel that simple. And I know that the request we make doesn’t always get answered as we ask that it would be. But if I could encourage you today to hang on to that mustard seed of faith. Whatever the boulder in your life is right now, it may feel like a small road block or it may look like Mount Everest from your vantage point, but could I encourage you to keep the faith? To hang in there? To hold on sister?
This is the song that’s been encouraging me in the midst of facing my mountain, called That’s What Faith Can Do, by Kutless:
I’ve seen dreams that move the mountains,
Hope that doesn’t ever end,
Even when the sky is falling.
I’ve seen miracles just happen,
Silent prayers get answered,
Broken hearts become brand new,
That’s what faith can do.
