Put your 80s style back on for Fashion Friday today because we’re going Back to the Future because Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!
There are ’80s parties everywhere! My girlfriend texted me to get ideas on what she could wear to an ’80s style 40th birthday party. Oh, this brings me great joy. Because you can suspend logic and style and just embrace zany and bright!
I categorized her style options in four recognizable ’80s categories:
Madonna Rock
Dynasty Glam
Pastel Preppy
Everyday ’80s (which is not really very everyday but captures everything from legwarmers to jelly bracelets)
Oh mercy y’all, what were we thinking? But we sure had fun!
So off we went to the thrift store. You can hit up your local Goodwill where everything is under $10.
We had a blast. We used these pictures as our guide and then selected what we could work with.
Here are some outtakes of our shopping excursion.
We wrapped up key finds at the Goodwill, and made the hard choice to go with the pink ensemble over the awesome bubble dress. For about $25, we found the two hot pink pieces (major 80s score), the crochet black top, a big stretchy belt (I had one!), and neon yellow purse. Afterwards, we headed over to a costume jewelry place to add some bling to her duds. We lucked out by finding a bright dangle necklace and a one handed black lace glove (wow – this is still sold y’all!). Finally, she picked up the crowning pieces on Amazon – neon leggings and fishnets and a big headband bow.
The key is to not coordinate colors, to go bright, to go bold, and to go nuts. Her earrings are neon green, as are her leg warmers, but the base of her outfit is neon pink, and the purse and necklace are neon yellow. She ended up with a perfected “everyday 80s” style married to Madonna rock. She texted me the final product last night so we could all enjoy.
So how about you? What theme parties are sweeping your neighborhood? What you’re favorite, budget conscious, way to style them? Report back and send any 80s pics you have – we love those!
