I’d planned to start with “bright bottoms” as today’s Fashion Friday, upon wise counsel from my friends, until they showed me CERTAIN options. Then it became clear we had to show the BEST bright bottoms. Because truth be told friends, some bottoms need to be burned.
I love me some red pants. Nothing says cool and quirky and interesting like a woman bold enough to wear red on bottom. But it’s not just red. It’s orange too. One friend asked me how to inject orange into a wardrobe, and this fall the place to use it is on bottom! Purples and blues and every color you can think of are cropping up at stores near you.
Here are my favorite items in stores now and ideas for how to style them:
1. For a weekender look, try these gorgeous cherry red ankle pants from Banana Republic (they also come in cobalt blue):
2. For an office look, I’m nuts about these plum colored flannel pants for fall! Note, Banana calls them barn red but I’m going to have to buy them (if they’ll only go on sale) to believe that:
3. It seems skinny jeans have a potpourri of color options. From the $20 Macy’s pumpkin jeans (or any other color you want) to the $170 cranberry (or forest) 7 for all Mankind jeans at Nordstrom’s, there’s one for every budget:
So how to style? Easy peasy. The key is to let the bright bottoms be the star.
Style your outfits simply.
For fall weekends, use something like Inspiring Pretty’s template with your fall colors on bottom, and solid rich blues in blouses and scarves on top. For casual Fridays, try rich wine colored bottoms with a solid sweater or top and classic scarf. If you want to try colored bottoms for the office, pull in other conservative pieces to formalize your outfit. This final look shows a classic white blouse, tweed blazer, and nude heels and handbag as perfect supplements to make the red pants the star but work appropriate.
But please, oh please, y’all, stop with solid color pants or jeans. There is a weird trend going on, apparently led by LuLaRoe leggings (you know my thoughts on leggings, they are NOT pants), where very random, and unflattering, prints are worn on bottom. Cupcakes. Donuts. Skeletons. Makeup. I don’t even have words; please do not wear this trend. It’s bright bottoms gone wrong.
