Stop laughing Minnesota friends. It SNOWED in Houston this morning.
That’s right, snow!
And this weekend is the biggest holiday party weekend of the year.
A colleague stopped me in the hall yesterday to ask advice: What do I wear to a holiday party this weekend in this cold?
In addition, she was uncomfortable with her size and didn’t know what would be appropriate.
First, as a girl who doesn’t love her size this season, let’s just set that aside. Wear something you feel pretty in and comfortable in. Let’s just enjoy this magical holiday season and set aside our stress over the scale for a few days.
Second, there is not one stinkin’ thing wrong with wearing pants. I know dresses are fun and sparkly but you might just freeze and a lot of you don’t feel comfortable with your legs (especially in winter).
So for today’s Fashion Friday, here’s a few quick fun ideas for a cold weekend of holiday parties:
I have these velvet emerald green pants from Old Navy. I love them so much. They’re a little bold, so you could achieve the same look with black velvet if it’s more your style. Or even black tuxedo pants. These are $29 and they have them in regular and plus sizes!
Pair these with a shimmery sweater and heels and you’re all set! If you’re looking for festive heels, check these out for $27 at Old Navy. I love them! No no for work, but yes yes for holiday parties.
Trying donning these while decorating your ears with dangling silver or crystal earrings. I love all the dangling earrings on Banana Republic’s site right now and am so sad I can only wear clip earrings!
No necklace needed between the texture in your sweater, pants, and shoes! (Don’t overdo! But with no necklace, you can probably throw some bright red lips on for good measure.)
For more casual parties, I’m all about dark denim, heeled ankle boots, and oversized sweaters in festive colors. Since you don’t have much time, you may miss a bargain. Normally, I troll eBay for deals. I just got a gorgeous oversized cardigan in a deep wine color with a pattern, only barely used, for $14!
I couldn’t find one quickly like I’m envisioning on-line (I did have to write this post on the fly!), but there are plenty of oversized cardigans on all the main women’s fashion sites as well as pretty pull over sweaters if that’s more your style. This foil cable knit sweater seems obscenely expensive for Gap, but if you can get it at 50% off it might be worth it for the holidays married with dark or black denim!
This would be perfect for a snowy weekend because you look like snow. Does Anthropologie really sell sweaters for over $500 though? This seems insane. I can’t imagine paying this for a sweater – even on sale!
(Remind, stick to hip length sweaters if you’re petite. These long sweaters work if you’re taller.)
Y’all, I’m all about Old Navy for holiday parties because a few of these items might get less wear and you can’t beat the prices. But I didn’t realize they had shoes. Look at these velvet ankle boots to amp up your holiday party look?!?! Burgundy velvet ankle boots for $30, um yes please (I LOVE velvet for Christmas!).
Pair this with stud earrings and a nice long sparkly necklace. Blow your hair out and wear it down. Spritz some perfume on and walk out the door like you own the place.
Are you heading out this weekend? Is it cold where you are? (Legitimately cold or Houston cold?) What’s your holiday Fashion Friday go to look? Wish we could all hang out together in our sweaters and boots tonight!
Thanks for all the fashion tips for this upcoming weekend!!!🎄❄️🎄
Excellent post! And I must say you changed my mind about Old Navy. I pretty much never shop there because in my head that is my poor kid college clothes store. I have a real job now, why would I go there? But for holiday things I’m not going to wear more than twice a year- perfect. I got the velvet boots the sparkle star heels and a party cami. Fun.
