Well happy summer y’all!
What’s up, doc?
What’s the frequency, Kenneth?
Whatcha talkin ’bout, Willis?
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
It’s sort of impossible to post in the summer. Work, lack of schedules (drives this scheduley-planning momma bananas), kids in and out of town, and general upside-downness leads to minimal time at the computer.
Good for me, I’m grooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwing, but bad for the blog.
So, here’s some news from my corner. I’ll share on the condition that you give me the skinny on your summer.
Whatcha doin? Going anywhere fun? Tell me about your camps, your style, your playlists.
Over here, life is happening:
I got a new job. Still at my company, but a fun new role. I’m moving over to the commercial side of the business to work on a big project. It’s an exciting position but I still hate being so far from home.
Me and the kids did our church’s VBS two weeks ago. I love “teaching” them so much. I work in the afternoons, but in the morning I’m the kids “crew leader.” Monday through Thursday, the week before Father’s Day, I sing and dance and get to know my kids friends and watch them learn about God. It’s a huge blessing for me to have a job where I get to do this. I hope to do it until they are sick of me being around.
We spent Father’s Day at the farm. The kids are spending a lot of the summer at the farm and ranch, but it was so nice for me to spend three days with them there. I always get to cook and read and watch the sun set. The kids caught fish, and we took a boat ride through the Louisiana bayous. We’re headed out there this weekend for the 4th of July.
The kids all got haircuts on Saturday. Little bit was crestfallen because they definitely cut more than 2 inches off and it’s not her best haircut. That’s our fault for trying to be efficient and taking them all three to Sports Clips. On the other hand, the eldest got ALL his hair shaved off, teeny little sprigs are all that’s left. I’m dying.
And the baby got THE best hair cut. He wanted it short on the side and spiked at the top. In order to do this with his super straight hair, he needed “product.” So we bought some and now he’s obsessed with his hair. Y’all, I know we’re about at the age I have to stop telling kid stories, but I’m dying. He wakes up in the morning and fixes it. He checks it. On Sunday, he said he wasn’t going to get in the pool at the swim team party because he didn’t want to mess up his hair. (He did get in.) Mercy, he’s SO cute!
We are FINISHED with swim team. I have a love hate relationship with this sport. The kids are such fast swimmers and love to swim. This is our third year and we’re in the 7-8s category now. That means the FULL swim meet, not abbreviated one, and they had to learn breaststroke and butterfly which was hard for them. I promised at least one more year so they could be the 8-year-olds in the 7-8 category. They all made it to the swim finals from the prelim meet on Friday, BUT we got utterly rained out on Saturday. Such a bummer for them! We waited two hours for them to call the meet, but they had to – rain and thunder, no good!
On the upside, that afternoon a friend invited us to their Cars 3 party, so we all five got to go to a movie (this never happens anymore) and eat and goof off.
My mom had a total knee replacement and is recovering well. We hung with her on Sunday and played board games. As outdoorsy as my kids are, we also LOVE board games. I introduced two new ones this weekend – Clue and Outburst Jr, because I found them in my mom’s garage from when we were kids.
Alright, that’s lots of words from me.
Your turn. What’s up?
This is my first comment, and like you – I have a love/hate relationship with summer and its relaxed schedule, which sometimes drives me to madness!
We have a lot of coming and going in our blended family. Add-in summer trips, camps and sleepovers…well, it gets a bit nuts. One child is in D.C. doing an internship.
One is spending a couple of weeks with her mom.
One went to church camp for a week, and came home all independent.
One is itching to do more with friends, but somewhat trapped in the house.
The “baby” just wants to play video games and ride a scooter all day.
We did manage a family vacation for a week at the beach. There is a trip to visit grandparents and the Midwest, plus a girlfriend getaways still to come. We are down to six weeks left of summer vacation – oh my!
Oh I love this update!!! Y’all are all over. Mercy, brave momma. I’m jealous of your beach vacation, I’m trying to get down to some sand in the near future.
We love board games too! Some favs to try: Sabatuer. Gubs. Ticket to ride. Forbidden Island.
We make lunch bentos to match our camp theme of the week.
We are training our shelter dog as he came to us polite but clueless.
I’m working hard on self Improvement-more jogging with my son and our dog. less wine and snacking. Blush.
And home improvement. Flowers in the empty beds. New patio furniture. Finally a Turkish chandelier to hang over my bathtub!!
More time to give speeches and mentor younger women. More time to spend on my pro bono case.
That’s why I love summer. I have time to do very little of those things (well except run) during the school year. Summer allows me to catch up and do better.
Oh I don’t know those games – I’m totally looking into them now! Love the tip. I’m also looking at a dog, lord help us…
I resisted the dog idea long and hard. My bad. That dog is the best decision I’ve made in a long time. The pure joy he brings my son. The great running buddy he is to me. The safety factor. The companionship. The humor he brings. Yep my kid was right, we did need a dog.
And I saved a life as he was running out of time at the shelter. All good.
