Advice for Living: Clothes

November 12, 2018 by Gindi 1 Comment

I lay awake sometimes and think of things I wish my kids would learn. On various topics. So I thought about starting posts for them called Advice for Living.  Just giving them a few thoughts on things to think about.

Lately, maybe because of the weather change, I’ve been thinking about lessons to impart on clothes.

Don’t wear clothes with stains or holes. Look respectable. (And don’t donate them. Throw them away. No one needs worn out clothes.)

Put a coat on when it’s cold outside. I’ve given up on protecting your legs. They’re just going to freeze into popsicles in the winter here. But if your chest isn’t warm, you could get sick. Throw on some layers and a coat for Pete’s sake.

Dress up for church and parties. It’s a sign of respect – for God and the party honoree. I realize that leggings (little bit) and athletic shorts (boys) are comfy and easy, but put a little effort in. Don’t be sloppy.

Ask what the attire is. If you don’t know how to dress for an event, call the coordinator. Get the information you need, take the time to think about it in advance, and it will pay off.

Don’t wear something just because it’s popular. You don’t need to blend in. Sometimes the “hot fashion” is crap. Ignore it. Look sharp. Know what works for you.  Remind me to show you a picture of myself in overalls in law school. Allow my mistakes to spare you.

When in doubt boys, wear a shirt with a collar. I don’t care how nice your t-shirt is, an unwrinkled polo shirt or button down is just a safer bet.

When in doubt daughter, dress one notch nicer. Unfortunately for girls there’s no easy rule like trousers and a collared shirt.  Throw a cute jacket and boots on over your usual ensemble to take it up a notch.  Fix your hair and press out wrinkles.  Make the effort.

Also, don’t wear short skirts (or tiny shorts). It’s just indecent. I know that it’s hard if you’re slim and have long legs (hard in the absolute best way ever) but figure it out. You need to learn modesty now. It will last with you for life. And yes, girls get the short end of the stick with everything being made to tiny, but search out the places that can dress you respectably.  You want to attract people because of your kindness and sharp intellect and not showing too much skin.

What’s your advice to your kids about clothes?  What are the challenges as they get older?

Welcome

Come on in. I have a reservation just for you. I know life is busy. I would love for us to step out for a relaxing lunch but schedules don't always allow. So let's pop open that salad or sandwich sitting in front of our computers, and we'll have lunch right here. A few minutes is all we need to connect to community.
