I asked and you responded.
Inevitably, we end up with an item in our wardrobe we fell in love with but never quite figured out with what we should wear it! This Fashion Friday sets out to fix some orphan piece dilemmas.
Our first nominee, an off white midi skirt. My girlfriend’s orphan looks much like this one from Banana Republic but in solid ivory:
How should she style the darn thing? Well, I have to say, the flats pictured in the image are risky. It can all too often read frumpy.
My take on this length of a skirt is to always pair with a high heel, fitted top, and possibly just the right belt.
You can tell from these there are several factors in styling the skirt, chief among them is exact length and amount of fullness. If it hangs in an A-line without significant flare, you should opt for a clean fitted top with pretty high heels and add a cool necklace or belt as an accessory. I love this latter look for an ivory skirt – the animal print three-quarter sleeve blouse and two tone heels are absolutely lovely.
Our next orphan nominee is a deep olive moto jacket. Here’s an image of it (the sleeves also are zippered):
My girlfriend has worn it with jeans but would love the option of wearing it in multiple avenues, and not just on date night. I agree! I love me a moto jacket. With the fall coming, I can’t wait to bring my evergreen one out (from last year’s Nordstrom’s semi-annual sale)! So this helped me to think more broadly about uses for such a fun jacket.
The obvious is the fall weekend around town look. Instead of wearing blue denim, pair your moto with black denim, a funky belt, and chunky scarf. You look cool but still approachable.
But don’t rule this jacket out for office. You can go for the simple sheath with moto look and pair with simple jewelry and pumps – let the jacket set your statement. Or, in an option I adore, go full blown lady-like with your base ensemble (pictured perfectly by Blake Lively here) and then edge it up with your moto jacket.
Don’t relegate that gorgeous jacket to the weekends. Pull it out all fall long!
So what about you? Do you have an orphan piece? How do you pair unique items which don’t have a logical partner?
And tell me what you want to hear about this fall? I’m looking for some fresh topics and would love your ideas!
